1911

This is the most important year for the film opus of the Manaki brothers and is actually the climax of their filming activity. Namely, they filmed three film stories with which they came close to the documentary film expression. These are the films about the visit of the last Turkish Sultan Mehamed Reshad V to Thessalonika and Bitola, and afterwards the visit of the Romanian delegation to Bitola, Gopesh and Resen, and the funeral of the metropolitan Emilianos. There is some very interesting information about the material that is mentioned at the end of this order. Namely, the film of the burial of Emilianos is the only preserved material filmed by the Manaki brothers, that has been edited and developed by themselves.

They have even written the inter-titles by hand and in this way they made the film ready for public performance. In the months of May and June, the travelling theater “Excelsior” visited Skopje in the theater building, and advertised its repertoire in the daily press. Among the many films that could be seen on this occasion, were the following: “Katarina Hovardova”, “The Merchant of Venice”, “The Balloon Race from Paris to Madrid”, etc. This means that the film program of this cinema presented the standard world repertoire of the time before the first world war. There is an interesting record that the “Excelsior Cinema” screened a film about Sultan Rashid V, but the record does not mention the origin of this film and the place of filming.
